Basic Function: The basic function of this position is to provide direct resident care and administer medications as prescribed by the physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, as approved according to state regulations: maintain the quality of services that will full-fill the goals of the facility, State Standards, and Federal regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinical Services:

  • Receive and give report at the start and end of assigned shift to update and verify clinical changes.
  • Pass medications and perform approved procedures within facility policies, State and Federal regulations.
  • Prepare, administer and document medications and procedures within the facility policy and State and Federal regulations.
  • Administers the right medication and right dosage to the right resident at the right time, by the right route.
  • Complete and inventory of controlled drugs at the start and end of shift to ensure an accurate count, as indicated.
  • Give input to the licensed nurse regarding resident function for the MDS process.
  • Give input regarding programs and processes within nursing department to improve quality services.
  • Assist in direct care services as needed to promote quality services.
  • Observe and report to licensed nurse adverse reaction to medications and procedures.
  • Perform monitoring procedures such as vital signs, B/P’s, weights, etc. and reports abnormal results to the charge nurse, as indicated.
  • Practice infection control and safety standards according to facility policy, State and Federal regulations.

Administrative Services:

  • Document the response to the administration of medications and procedures performed.
  • Ensure use of medications and supplies in a cost-effective manner.
  • Report to supervisor any resident, family, inter and intra-department compliments/concerns.
  • Report any abuse, neglect, or exploitation immediately to charge nurse and/or supervisory staff.
  • Participate on assigned committees.
  • Attend continuing education and training as assigned.
  • Complete usual occurrence form as indicated.
  • Ensure medications are ordered within 72 hours of the last dose to be administered.
  • Customer Service:
  • Presents professional image to consumers through dress, behavior, speech, punctuality, and attendance.
  • Adheres to facility standards for resolving consumers concerns.
  • Ensure resident rights are respected.
  • Practice consistent treatment to nursing employees.
  • Enhance teamwork throughout the facility.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of nursing procedures and pharmacy policies.
  • Knowledge of medication administration standards.
  • Ability to organize and utilize time management skills.
  • Ability to follow policies as set forth by facility, State and Federal guidelines.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information, exercise independent judgment and decision-making based on medication aide guidelines.
  • Ability to communicate needs of residents and families to supervisor.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English.

Experience and/or Training:

  • Must be a certified nursing assistant and in good standing on the Nurse Aide Registry.
  • Must have current approved medication aide certification.
  • Minimum of 1-year experience as a C.N.A. in a long term care facility, desirable.
